Mariveles, Bataan – Export Processing Zone

The place where many foreign companies made their products in the Philippines with incentives regarding import-export duties process. It is normally on the export processing zone wherein in-and-out of the materials and finish products is being monitored by the government.

According to ibiblio.org, Congressman Pablo Roman Sr., representative of Bataan who was the author of the Republic Act 5490 or the designation of Mariveles, Bataan as the first free trade zone in the Philippines, began the idea of the zone. In the early 1972s, three congressmen sponsored a bill to convert the free trade zone authority into government corporation but it was stalled in the Congress due to the opposition of the many. The land for the zone, although settled by Barrio Nassco, was readily made available. This was formerly occupied by the military reservation of the USA and was given up in 1965 after 40 years of occupancy. The land which was promised to the residents was never delivered.
